Uplift, a prominent digital campaign group, has joined an international boycott of advertising on Facebook.

The group said yesterday that it would join the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, which is putting pressure on Facebook to tackle misinformation and hate speech with stricter fact checking and screening of content.

Uplift has organised hundreds of online campaigns in Ireland. Siobhán O’Donoghue, its director, said: “While this boycott may only represent a small dip in their advertising revenue in the grand scheme of things, our goal is much more ambitious than simply targeting Facebook’s profits. We want to show that actually that we don’t need Facebook as much as we and others think we do.
